Mose Allison is one of the most unique and literate songwriters in the history of jazz. A surprise hit of his version of Willie Dixon's "Seventh Son" in 1957 made him a pop star briefly, but it's his catalog of laid-back, slightly cynical tunes that has made him a legend. Songs like "Your Mind Is on Vacation, but Your Mouth is Working Overtime" and "Middle Class White Boy" combine down-home humor and jazzy, blues-based melodies in a way that can never be duplicated. Bob Dorough, another acerbic songwriter and pianist, may be best known for the tunes he's composed for the Schoolhouse Rock series, but he has written hits for Mel Tormé ("Comin' Home Baby") and Miles Davis ("Blue Xmas") and has a back catalog that rivals Allison's in its depth and skewed outlook. Both play at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero W, Oakland) on Thursday, July 2, 7:30 & 10 p.m., Friday, July 3, 7:30 p.m., Saturday, July 4, 7 p.m., and Sunday, July 5, 2 & 7 p.m., $18-$24, $5 for kid's matinee.
