Just as rapper-actor Mos Def keeps diversifying his portfolio -- first with the rock album The New Danger, then with a jazz band that's performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center -- famed Bay Area jazz club Yoshi's is upping its own street cred. With two venues now, the club caters as much to the grown and sexy R&B crowd as to the jazz purists who would otherwise be at home listening to their Don Cherry Pandora stations. Now, Yoshi's is ready for its inaugural hip-hop show, featuring Mos Def and an all-star quartet: Robert Glasper on keys, drummer Chris "Daddy" Dave, trumpeter KeyonHarrold, and bassist Mark Kelly. In an interview last year, Glasper said he respects Mos Def both as an emcee and a proper musician, because he can also play piano and drums. He'll definitely bring out an interesting crowd when the group descends on Oakland Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero) Tuesday, Apr. 14 through Thursday, Apr. 16 (8 & 10 p.m.), and Friday, Apr. 17 (11:59 p.m.) at its San Francisco location (1330 Fillmore St.). $60.
