Re: “An Oakland Original

We had been presented with a $35 gift certificate. On Easter Sunday we decided to redeem it.
After a 15 minute wait, despite seeing various empty tables we were seated. The two adjacent two tops were also seated. The waitress took the orders for these two tables, we were ignored.
Beverages were served, we were ignored.
After a further ten minutes we were waited upon. As a vegetarian I chose the Old Oakland omelette without pancetta, I mentioned that they could substitute a small side of fruit in lieu of pancetta. Subsequently this resulted in a $3 charge for a side of potatoes and $0.50 charge for small bowl of fruit.
After some further ten minutes I was served my coffee, excellent coffee.
Meanwhile the two adjacent two tops were served, ate, paid their bills and left. We were eventually served five minutes after this, or rather, my companion was offered a plate of frozen O'Brian hash browns marinated in warm oil.
I sent it back, much to the consternation of the wait staff helper.
Eventually, our food was presented, by another waitress who appeared to be firing on all cylinders.
The eggs were cooked properly, my companions ham slice was nothing special. my omelette filling was bland and not as described on the menu, the toast was cold and unbuttered and not the specified sour-dough.
At an adjacent four top three customers were served the fourth person's order apparently disappeared between table and register. She was served some ten minutes after her companions
Bill, tax and tip (no cash back for gift certificates, we were offered a business card valued at $4.82 credit for our next visit, we elected to use this as a very undeserved tip) used up the $35.00 certificate.
As an aside I watched one of the kitchen help scoop out from an 8 quart Cambro containing to fill the cooks smaller container using bare hands, ala mud-pie making, the product appeared to be some sort of white cubes with green leaves scatted throughout.
Bearing in mind that Oakland Bar & Grill is only a couple of blocks away this Cafe really needs to smatren up it's ideas.
It would appear the newspaper reviewer ate at a different cafe than the preceding reviewer and us.. NOT recommended, waste of money.
