More Water Rationing a Certainty

It's official. The state's end-of-winter snowpack report shows that we just endured our third straight dry rainy season. Overall, the Sierra snowpack stands at about 81 percent, according to the Chron. And while that might not sound bad, the problem is that 2007 and 2008 were below normal, too, so our reservoirs are already depleted. Expect more water rationing measures this summer. In the East Bay, EBMUD's mandatory 15 percent water rationing plan doesn't look like it will be enough to deal with the shortage -- not surprisingly. So don't be surprised if the agency toughens the plan in the coming months. Let's hope any new proposal they come up with goes after the heavy water users in Contra Costa County and stops penalizing folks who are already saving water on this side of the hills.
