In addition to the benefit show we just blogged about, two other events at Ashkenaz will also help Haiti’s earthquake victims. Haitian-born, Oakland-based Afro-Caribbean band Kalbass Kreyol will headline a show on Thursday, January 28, at Ashkenaz (8 p.m., $10+). The band plays a mix of Afro-funk, reggae, salsa, merengue, and traditional Haitian styles such as kompa, rara, and zouk. Proceeds from the show will go to the Haitian Emergency Relief Fund. The following week, another benefit show at Ashkenaz will feature Bay Area-based, Afro-Caribbean fusion group Lakay, led by Mystic Man, and the Haitian dance troupe Rara Fusion. The show will start with an Afro-Haitian dance lesson. The event happens Saturday, February 6; dance lesson starts at 8:30 p.m., band starts at 9:30 p.m. Donation requested: $13 and up; $10 and up in advance and for students.
