Comedy drama, Romance
From the far-fetched end of the Wes Anderson sensibility (The Darjeeling Limited, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) comes the tale of Suzy (Kara Hayward) and Sam (Jared Gilman), a pair of precocious teenage runaways who give everyone on the New England island of New Penzance a chance to launch into Anderson’s precious dialogue. It, and the story (by Anderson and Roman Coppola) are extremely arch to little demonstrable purpose. Might have been better as an animation á la Fantastic Mr. Fox – the art direction is consistently more interesting than the story. But then we would have to miss out on Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Bruce Willis, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Harvey Keitel, and Bob Balaban as various perplexed authority figures. Come to think of it, that might not be such a bad idea. A step backward for Anderson. (97 min.)
