A young African American grows up, from insecure boy to hardened but thoughtful man, in this wonderfully etched coming-of-age drama by director Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy). It’s stocked with at least a dozen perfect performances, each character equipped with non-clichéd dialogue by Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney (based on McCraney’s play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue) and Jenkins’ refreshingly organic mise-en-scene, in which the narrative floats as naturally as the ocean breeze of Miami. Starring Trevante Rhodes, Naomie Harris, Mahershala Ali, Ashton Sanders, André Holland, and Janelle Monáe. Recommended (110 min.).
