Drama, Romance, SciFi/Fantasy
Visual effects artist turned filmmaker Gareth Edwards makes the most of a limited budget and his Central American locations with this tropical-chiller sci-fi riff about gigantic outer-space aliens “quarantined” below the US-Mexico border, and how they mess up the plans of an American (Scoot McNairy) hired to fetch his boss’ daughter (Whitney Able) back to the States. Best forget about any allegorical booshwah on immigration and such and snuggle up to the title critters, flying octopus/spider thingies with glowing tentacles. Written and directed with imagination by Edwards, and filmed in Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, and Texas. (94 min.)
