Monster Squad

When: Fri., Jan. 11, 8 p.m. 2008
Price: $6

Cribbing its name from an '80s B-horror movie in which a gang of teenagers wages war against Frankenstein and the Wolf Man, Monster Squad is an irrepressible Vacaville-based five-piece known for taking a standard four-chord melody and demolishing it. While its lyrics often spawn from easy-to-remember truisms like What doesn't kill you makes you stronger ("Strength Through Pain"), Monster Squad isn't beholden to hardcore clichés. The band members have a good sense of self-irony and know how to play a real bruiser without flying off the handle. This Friday, Jan. 11, the Monsters headline a knockout lineup at 924 Gilman (924 Gilman St., Berkeley), featuring the similarly themed bands Whiskey Rebels, Cropnox, Dcoi, Knucklepuck, and the Los Angeles band Urban Decay. 7:30 p.m., $6. 924Gilman.org
