Monster of Zayante Creek

In his latest exhibit, Monster of Zayante Creek, Oakland artist Eli Thorne explores the idea of a lost boyhood, particularly in relation to his life as a trans man. Through imaginative, colorful paintings rich with allegory and symbols — there’s a recurring mythological character who seems to be a queer oracle of sorts, for example — he expresses a mix of fears, regrets, and nostalgia for a playful and youthful moment in time that he never got to experience. At the same time, there’s an interesting blend of natural landscapes and fantasy, with androgynous superheroes, animals, and aspects of modern trans life all occupying the same spaces. Born in England, raised in Santa Cruz, and schooled in the Bay Area, Thorne has shown his work at a slew of local and international venues, including SOMArts, Incline Gallery, the Mills College Art Museum, and, now, Berkeley’s newish Totally Rad Gallery.
