A quiet, humble Algerian immigrant named Bachir Lazhar (played by French comic actor Fellag aka Mohamed Fellag) comes into a classroom of Montreal middle-schoolers trying to deal with the loss of their beloved teacher, who hanged herself in that very classroom during recess one day. It’d be great if M. Lazhar were the greatest teacher in the world and could easily soothe the kids’ anxieties, but he’s a fallible human being after all. That’s what makes Canadian filmmaker Philippe Falardeau’s warm, tidy character study so gratifying – that, alongside aptly restrained performances by Émilion Néron, Sophie Nélisse, and Fellag. Falardeau’s sensitive screenplay is adapted from a stage play by Évelyne de la Chenelière. (94 min.)
