Re: “Shotgun-Wielding Trio Rob North Berkeley Pedestrian

Thanks for the opportunity to put the number for 911 on my phone. Ironic.

Re: “Greenwashing at Berkeley High?

As a parent in recovery from three BHS kids who graduated from three different programs, my first, most cynical, response was "well at least the kid's get something out of it." BHS small schools are all political in nature, all manipulative. Its less noticeable to those who share the prevalent ethos the small school push.

My second and more considered response is that the school and the corporation would both benefit from being held accountable to each other... with or without the gift cards. Why not accept financial assistance from those who can give it -- while supporting Mr. Wolkenfeld and others in maintaining an appropriate objectivity?

Re: “Corrections for the Week of March 18

We were surprised to see the article, but not outraged. Even with the occasionally misspelled name, Rachel Swan has done a stunning job of pointing out problems in the situation that many of us have been concerned about for years, but not able to express as coherently.

Perhaps I misunderstand the meaning of "hit piece?" As in "she hit the bulleye several times?"

Re: “Dona Spring Dies

There is some irony to memorializing someone with a item that begins "Ah, Shit." You did a better job than I expected. The Berkeley Daily Planet called Spring "the heart" of the City Council (and Worthington the brain?). I hope that she will be replaced by someone with both qualities in abundance. It would be great if all City Council members cared as much about their constituents, but without making symbolic statements that piss off the rest of the country and make Berkeley look foolish.

Rest in Peace.

Re: “Who Baited Whom at Berkeley Rallies?

Excellent article. I'm stunned by the way traditional anti-war groups are more and more under the influence of various communist organizations -- and I think it needs to be publicized even though (or because) so many here simply refuse to believe they are here. Google Zombietime's photo coverage of the SF Protests of March 19. He has a whole section on counting how many different communist, and communist front groups were at the protests.

My son has a class with "Micah" and was astounded by the "Rebels with a Cause" segment on "Nick News" (it was rerun a few months back). What amazed him was Ellerbee's obvious bias, in an item that was referred to as news. Berkeley is bringing out the latent conservative in many of the high school students these days -- maybe because that's the only option for current youth to be "counter-culture" in this town?

Re: “Code Pink Plays an April Fool's Joke ... on Whom?

I wonder how embarrassed Code PINK would be if they could feel genuine embarrassment. Zombietime has pictures from today's "press conference" and it certainly does look like a cheap stunt to publicize Medea Benjamin, tiara and all. Better that than a true story.

Last night I spent 3 hours trying to track the story down after KTVU teased it on the evening news. 3 hours was long enough to strengthen my commitment to support the USMC OSO's continued presence in Berkeley. In addition to the previous issues of free speech and assembly, and not letting the City Council make public policy on the basis of personal opinion.... I now feel strongly that Code PINK must never have a real victory to crow about... given the mileage they can get out of a fantasy win.

Also, it was after only 45 minutes that I began to believe it was a April Fools trick... and the fact that no one but KTVU mentioned it made me very hopeful.

Thanks for your continued insightful reporting on this long, drawn out story.

Re: “Protesters vs. Berkeley Cops

My name is Heather too, and I hope you and your family will be very happy in your new country -- but, you should choose carefully to find a place that will allow you the level of personal liberty and opportunity afforded by the United States of America. Switzerland has what you're looking for, but they don't accept most immigrants. In fact, visa status might be a problem lots of places. Oh, and Switzerland has universal conscription of males into the armed forces -- to protect their neutrality, so I guess that's right out. There's always the middle-east, if Europe doesn't pan out.

The Berkeley recruiters are talking to students graduating from University -- who have the choice to join the USMC and go to Officer Candidate School. The US Armed Forces are currently a volunteer force, sworn to protect you and your kids whether you wish you could leave or not.

More to the point, the meeting last night was a crock. World Can't Wait! has been setting the BPD up for this for weeks, and their edited footage in front of an audience that would believe anything anyone said about the Police proves nothing. The Police have handled themselves in a fair and professional fashion. Go back and look at the WCW! videos of people smacking property with chains and yelling F*@k You at the police and tell me you'd handle it half as well.

I hope that living in another place for awhile will give you a better perspective on what you have here. Even moving to another part of the United States might do that. Good luck, I know you mean well and want the best for your family. So do I.
