It's her special day

As almost any mother can tell you, Mother's Day is often less about mom than about mom and her brood. Sure, there are some mothers who get a night alone at a cottage by Point Reyes, or a day at a full-service spa somewhere, but most are busy embodying their essential mom-ness on Mother's Day, and that means being with the kids. So, what to do? You could kick off the weekend with a performance by the Pacific Boychoir. Saturday, this band of elementary schoolkids from the charter Pacific Boychoir Academy and its after-school program will raise their treble -- as opposed to their troubled -- voices at Children's Fairyland (690 Bellevue Ave., Oakland). No one has adequately explained why prepubescent boys' voices produce one of the most angelic sounds on the planet or how such imps manage it, but you can ponder that and other mysteries of the universe at 1 and 2:30 p.m. Come earlier and catch a puppet show, or stay later and see kids' theater. But if it's laughter you need to endure momhood, then wait till Sunday and take your tykes over to Owen Baker-Flynn's fire-eating juggling act called "Act in a Box," at 1 and 2:30 p.m. There you'll get to see Baker-Flynn, the 500-month-old mime, pratfaller, and magician, keep plenty of balls in the air -- just like mom. or 510-452-2259. -- Ann Murphy

Two special days for kids

Paramount's Great America in Santa Clara has two special events for special young people this week. On Friday, Physics, Science, and Math Day offers hands-on science displays and support materials in addition to the usual thrill rides. Go ahead -- test the G force on the Delirium or the Vortex. It's for students and teachers only. For more info, visit or phone 408-986-5853 (group tickets). Then on Mother's Day Sunday, it's the fourteenth annual Courageous Kids Day -- in which Great America, in partnership with the American Cancer Society, hosts kids with cancer and their mothers. To apply, phone 408-879-1032. Further details at -- Kelly Vance
