Mobb Deep

When: Thu., May 28, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $20+
In the 1990s, Havoc and Prodigy of Mobb Deep were up to their waists in the trans-coastal rap wars, having contributed verses to the Capone-n-Noreaga dis track “L.A., L.A” and having issued their own classic Tupac takedown, “Drop a Gem on Em.” That said, Tupac’s missives were pretty venomous, too, especially on “Hit ‘Em Up” — but that beef is practically an antique. Havoc took over production on the Queensbridge duo’s 1995 album, The Infamous, which leant it an especially cohesive, downcast veneer, befitting the lyrics’ frank block politics. It’s also the vessel for “Shook Ones Pt. II,” featuring one of the most menacing, spare beats in a scene that specialized in them, along with one of the most memorable self-aggrandizing opening lines: I got you stuck off the realness/We be the infamous. Mobb Deep’s show on Thursday at 1015 Folsom (1015 Folsom St., San Francisco) coincides with The Infamous’ twenty-year anniversary.
