When: July 5-Sept. 1 2018
Influenced by Eastern spirituality, Andrzej Michael Karwacki’s work usually evokes a passage to equanimity, which Buddhists believe is one of the Four Immeasurables and feels like a transition into conscious reality. However, Karwacki says his latest project is more about finding self-awareness in today’s political climate. Karwacki, a Poland native best known for his abstract paintings, creates a modern-day mood board by piecing together strips of paintings with magazine and newspaper cutouts. Hidden typography fragments combine into affirmations such as “It’s all about… what you can do” and “I now realize… we can all go in,” leaving viewers in a contemplative, kind of woke state. Up until Sept. 1, Karwacki, with Michael Cutlip and David Fredrik Moussallem, present Mixed, a mixed-media exhibition with daring and unexpected visuals. Cutlip uses bold color blocking to convey a sense of peace in imbalance while Moussallem tells “stories from the streets” by playing with graffiti photos and posters.
