Comedy, Drama
Art fave Harmony Korine has tried obscure and sleazy (Gummo) and obscure and pathetic (Julien Donkey-Boy). Now here’s his obscure and huggable, the fatiguing story of a Michael Jackson impersonator in Paris (Diego Luna) who follows a Marilyn Monroe impersonator (Samantha Morton) to a house full of even more awkward celebrity impersonators in the Scottish Highlands. He pads that out with a parallel unconnected plot about a crazy Roman Catholic priest in Panama (Korine pal Werner Herzog) and his team of sky-diving nuns without parachutes. A few individual bright spots submerged in self-indulgent sheep dip. Among the stymied cast are Denis Lavant, as a fiendish Charlie Chaplin, and James Fox, as the Pope. Written by the Korine brothers, Harmony and Avi (112 min.).
