Minding the Gap

When: Wed., Feb. 13, 7 p.m. 2019
Price: $5-$13
Few young filmmakers receive as much universal acclaim for their debut project as 24-year-old Bing Liu has for his simple, yet deeply compassionate and often heart-wrenching documentary “Minding the Gap.” The film, which has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, chronicles the lives of the director and his two closest friends, Zack and Keire, as they grow up within the skateboarding scene in the rust belt city of Rockville, Ill. As details of the crews’ troubled family lives unfurl, the audience quickly realizes that skating is not just a way to pass time in a small town for these boys; it’s a means of survival. Skating is an avenue to process the wounds of their unstable childhoods and navigate the trials of becoming good men in a town that offers little by way of job opportunities, safety nets, or role models.
