Re: “Understanding North Korea

I thank Ms. Wentz for writing an article that has the courage to challenge the one-dimensional depiction of North Korea that usually passes as the truth.

Many Koreans understand that regime change could lead to the same kinds of tragedies that we see in other countries that the U.S. has purportedly tried to save.
The opinions we see in this article are far from the lunacy claimed by these critics. They are, in fact, commonplace in South Korea, a country which has the most to lose. Yes, there are people who no longer care about reunification or who have never known a Korea that was not divided. But many South Koreans also know that peaceful negotiations are beneficial and necessary not only for North Korea but for the South. These sentiments are not noticed by those who are intent upon reducing an entire country to a caricature.

We in the U.S. should be wary of the potential results of the politics of demonization and of the kinds of attacks made against those who aim to present a more complex point of view. I am personally unnerved by the inflammatory remarks and choice of "off-duty" activities of someone representing Homeland Security.
