First Moneyball, now Curryball. Supremely entertaining baseball dramedy is based on the true story of down-on-his-luck Los Angeles pro sports agent JB Bernstein (Jon Hamm), who gets the bright idea to travel to India, conduct a “Million Dollar Arm” amateur talent contest for pitchers (based on that country’s love for cricket), then bring the top two athletes to try out for Major League Baseball in the states. Thomas McCarthy’s witty script goes yard in the hands of director Craig Gillespie and his chatty cast: Alan Arkin as a grizzled old scout, Lake Bell as Bernstein’s love interest, Aasif Mandvi as Bernstein’s business partner, Bill Paxton as a coach, and Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi) and Madhur Mittal (Slumdog Millionaire) as the wowed prospects from the Indian backwater. Even sports avoiders will get a chuckle out of this Slumdog Hardball, and baseball fans will eat it up like chicken tikka masala (124 min.).
