Re: “Drakes Estero Deserves Full Wilderness Protection

Horrible article, unsubstantiated. Take this 1 phrase "Moreover, Drakes Bay Oyster Company has an abysmal track record in complying with environmental protections and does not live up to any honest definition of "sustainable."

The next article begins, "How so?", and then the author goes on to describe how oysters are non-native. Or the author describes how there are alternatives. But she never addresses that the use isn't sustainable or there's an abysmal track record. Eurasians certainly aren't a native species, yet we're preserving this "wilderness" presumeably largely for them (us). Oyster farming and mariculture are largely sustainable. Many of the usual criticisms of mariculture (invasive species or waste, as with penned salmon) simply don't exist in this setting.

In a later paragraph the author describes the invasive species D-Vex, and that it contaminates much of the oyerster company's equipment, although she offers no substantiation of this claim--is it as spurious as many other claims made in the past by others (decline in the harbor seal population, oyster fecal matter contamination of the estero muds, both of which have been proven untrue with respect to the oyster operation)? Any reseach will inform the reader of how invasive this species is. The author does not claim that it was introduced by the oyster company, nor does she claim removal of their equipment will erradicate it. If it exists on the oyster company's equipment, is it soley a reflection of an existing condition? Where is the cause and effect?

In fact, most if not all of the author's claims are unsubstantiated.

Enough. Fill your articles with facts, not opinions. Support your claims. Until you do, it's all a bunch of hogwash.
