Re: “Too Much Police Oversight in Richmond?

Yes, Richmond is different. We led the way with real community policy and confidence in the local police is much improved and still improving. But the statistics that you use to question whether there is more to be done (public confidence rose to 59%) mean that 41% still do not have confidence. And no matter how good our police department is, an unarmed young man who did not threaten anyone was killed by a police officer. Citizen oversite and review of the police is essential for building community confidence.

If the proposed Richmond ordinance requiring the Police Commission (being renamed as the Citizen’s Police Review Board) to investigate any death or serious injury as a result of police action would be the most rigorous in the state, then that says a lot about oversite in the state. When a person is killed or badly injured it is unfair to put the responsibility on the family to immediately file the paper work for an investigation even if they know of the procedure. This especially burdens people who communicate in a different language or lack connections to lawyers.

Re: “Richmond Councilman Gets Called on His Junk

Thank you for making this public. A large part of the Richmond community knew much of what the article contained, but it took some good reporting to pull it all together.

What enables this kind of anti-social, corrupt behavior?

-Chevron participates by crediting Corky Booze for its $200,000 (tax deductible) contribution to a training program it was giving anyway.

-The leadership of a so-called “community coalition” knew all of this about Corky but bestowed the Martin Luther King award on him for modeling non-violent behavior.

-Some media reporters regard Corky as “colorful,” framing community issues around his views, and building him up.

-Politicians who claim to “bridge both sides,” give credence to his nonsense.

Corky, bully that he is, blames the Richmond Progressive Alliance, Mayor Gayle McLaughlin, and Councilmembers Jovanka Beckles and Tom Butt, the only people who will stand up to his narcissism and nonsense.
