Re: “Friday’s Briefing: Oakland Hit With Another $1 Million Judgment in Brooks Case; Senators Call for Investigation Into ICE Lying About Schaaf

No, not a commission. A department! Then the city could hire a manager and take staff from another department, probably Parks & Rec since this an environmental issue. Then Parks & Rec would have to hire new people to replace the ones who left. Everybody would win!

Re: “Smart Growth Housing Bill Is a Game-Changer

I'm with Nick W and Stacey Elam. Painting SB827 as an anti-racist measure is baloney. It will result in destructive gentrification in low-income neighborhoods, as in West Oakland, because that's where our transit hubs are.

I live in Glenview, a mainly single-family neighborhood in Oakland. YIMBYs love our neighborhood. They want to live here precisely, exactly, and only because ours is a wonderful place, a place we made and kept with our time, money and energy. The outrageous appreciation in the price of housing here isn't because of us--it's because jobs and transit aren't spread around the bay. Jobs are in SF and Silicon Valley, transit is a bad joke except for buses in some places.

SB827 isn't a one-time change in zoning law. It's part of a long-term strategy using small successive changes in local laws, creating a net that captures them. It's a common means of undermining local democracy--change a law here and a law there and pretty soon you have a sledgehammer destroying a broad swath of long-time customs and laws, and all of the destruction made perfectly legal piecemeal. Notice, as Mr Gammon says, that the law doesn't simply upgrade local zoning laws to allow higher buildings or reward localities for applying them. It "takes zoning near transit hubs out of the hands of local governments." And notice the sneers at local politicians who serve their communities' interests.

Re: “The Warriors' Empty Gesture

Hey Robert, those T-shirts aren't a hollow gesture. They're a slap in the face from the gloating, SOB owners.

Re: “The East Bay's Changing Demographics

Since the failure of De La Fuente to win the mayor's office, Oakland's Latinos have had a disproportionately small impact on the city's politics and its black voters have had a disproportionately large one. Maybe now things will balance out. Certainly, our black voters have sent some sketchy pols to the city council, not that they have a monopoly on poor choices.

Re: “No-Bid $300,000 Contract for Oakland's Department of Violence Prevention Consultant Put on Hold

How many consultants and activists on violence prevention has the city already heard from over the years? More than enough, I think.

Re: “Why Trump’s Health Is Likely Far from “Excellent”

The mental functioning he passed doesn't test for what he's got. And he's not 6'3, either. As a result, his weight-to-height ratio makes him overweight. The Navy doctor who examined him has had that job for a couple of decades. This is apparently the first time he's fudged the results. The schmuck caved.

Re: “Oakland City Council Should Censure Desley Brooks

"many progressive city activists have consistently given Brooks a pass because she's tough on police" That and white guilt.
