Drama, Romance
A quiet, thoughtful Los Angeles nurse named Ruby Murray (the extraordinarily beautiful Emayatzy Corinealdi) tries very hard to keep a light in the window for her incarcerated husband, Derek (Omari Hardwick), in this deceptively deep character study by filmmaker Ava DuVernay. Ruby’s wholehearted attempt to live a decent, single life without her man is told at the pace of life itself, in vastly understated terms, and yet the performances — by the principal players plus actors David Oyelowo, Edwina Findley, and Lorraine Toussaint — accumulate a power that lifts the drama to the heights of the real-life category. Written and directed by DuVernay, who also made I Will Follow. (101 min.)
