Comedy, Drama
The true story – more or less – of how the Internet became the world’s portal of porn. In filmmaker George Gallo’s slack-adaisical comedy, a pair of Los Angeles nerds (Giovanni Ribisi, Gabriel Macht) seeking new vistas in masturbation fodder, circa 1997, join forces with a Russian gangster strip club owner (Rade Serbedzija) as well as an ambitious Texas businessman (Luke Wilson) to organize credit-card-based paid “adult” content on the Web. Enter geysers of money and a flurry of up-side-your-head. Also one or two laughs, but not quite enough. Has a little of the flavor of writer Gallo’s Midnight Run, but alas, no Robert De Niro. The supporting cast is crammed with character actors from Gallo’s Eighties-Nineties high period: James Caan, Robert Forster, Kevin Pollak, John Ashton, Kelsey Grammer, Martin Kove, Christopher McDonald, et al. Laura Ramsey also costars as the Wilson character’s porn-star love interest (105 min.).
