Re: “A Tectonic Shift for Marijuana

Label me hardcore, I guess. The notion of a benign but intensely partisan governor's office overseeing cannabis regulation is one of the biggest pipe dreams to be found in AB 266. Remember Ah-nold? Christine Whitman? Pete Wilson and George Deukmejian, for crying out loud? Why don't we put the governor in charge of alcohol and tobacco regs while we're at it?

There's nothing historic about seeing a bad bill pass the Legislature when more meaningful reforms are sorely needed. Nothing in Brown's portfolio suggests he is remotely interested in fair and balanced cannabis regulations. Rather, he has unleashed the regulatory hounds and we are so excited about getting any form of attention from the Legislature that some advocates are actually promoting AB 266 as real reform. Considering every city and county in California can opt out of the regs from Day One, banning everything that state law provides for, including dispensaries and personal cultivation, I'll save the term "historic" for Legalization 2016. Even then, I'll wait to see what watered-down initiative gets passed before I celebrate.

Re: “California Does Not Have A Medical Marijuana Recommendation Problem

One problem is that the younger folk don't look "sick enough" to receive recommendations. Cut-rate clinics, bargain-basement advertising and Skype operations also raise eyebrows, and rightfully so, but the one thing Prop. 215 does very well is to protect doctors who recommend cannabis. Our biggest problem, for real, is the proliferation of 99-plant recs, and the creation of state cultivation licenses should render those relics of an unregulated past.
