MIBB: University of Copenhagen Jazz Big Band

When: Wed., April 16, 8:30 p.m. 2008
Price: $10

Events like this don't happen every day. MIBB, the University of Copenhagen's jazz big band and singers, comes to the West Coast for the first time. Here to attend the Cal State Hayward Jazz Festival, the group wanted to play for dancers, so it's performing a swing-dance concert at Ashkenaz (1317 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley) on Wednesday, April 16. A crack unit of seventeen students and professionals, MIBB (the Danish abbreviation for the Big Band of the Musicology Department) studies American big band music, from swing to funk, and has performed at major European jazz festivals. And unlike American big bands, MIBB has a good mix of women and men, as well as a four-voice singing group. What could be more fun? Dance duo Nick & Shanna start the evening with a swing dance lesson at 7:30 p.m. Then the real swinging starts! 8:30 p.m., $10. Ashkenaz.com or 510-525-5054.
