M.I.A at the Fox Theater in Oakland

Last year, British rapper and all-around anti-pop star M.I.A. announced that her upcoming record, AIM, her fifth studio LP, would be her last. It kind of makes sense. In her nearly two-decade-long career, she’s continually redefined pop music, from her early days as part of the English New Rave scene to her surprise ascent to actual pop stardom in the late-2000s. Her ability to weave together world beat elements, hip-hop aggression, political activism, and pop sensibilities — with both middle fingers up in the air — is astounding. She’s been so far ahead of the curve that every one of her albums has been an event of sorts. That’s why it was a little shocking that AIM felt like a greatest hits record. Considering that so much of what she’s done has become part of the pop lexicon, maybe there’s nothing left in pop to redefine.
