Metals in Motion

When: March 19-April 20 2008

Kineticism is not something we normally associate with jewelry, but it is the theme of the current show at the Collectors Gallery of the Oakland Museum. Over fifty jewelers, sculptors and metal artists from the Monterey Bay Metal Arts Guild are showing more than 100 handcrafted pieces either suggesting movement or actually featuring moving parts. Daria Salas' pendant, Flock of Birds, and Fran Grinels' bracelet, I've Got Rhythm, fit into the metaphoric category, while Judy Foreman's wheeled sculpture, Speed Demon, Joyce Chadderdon's partial skeleton, Articulation, and Wendy Ballen's coiled wire piece, Snake and Eggs, are all reconfigurable artworks. The wide range of materials, including gold, silver, steel, copper, and brass, is worked in a variety of techniques, including forging, casting and enameling, and mokumegane, a Japanese lamination process translated as "wood-grain metal." Through April 20 at OaklandMuseum (1000 Oak St., Oakland).Collectorsgallery@museumca.org or 510-834-2296.
