Part Two, alongside Mesrine: Killer Instinct, of the true crime story of Seventies-era French “celebrity criminal” Jacques Mesrine follows our anti-hero (played winningly by actor Vincent Cassel) from Canada back to France, where the movie goes into a long montage of bank robberies, courtroom antics, prison scenes, kidnappings for ransom, and other naughtiness. After awhile, we begin to wonder whether director Jean-François Richet’s two-part, four-hour saga might be better boiled down to, say, two hours, with nothing lost. Just a thought. Cassel kicks out the jams, as does Ludivine Sagnier as Mesrine’s girlfriend, but Mathieu Amalric, as a prison buddy, looks hastily added on. As in Part One, the screenplay is written by Abdel Raouf Dafri (133 min.).
