Meshuggah

When: Sun., May 6, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $29.50

At this point, any more praise heaped upon Meshuggah is just going to come across as trite. But really, there's no getting around it: Meshuggah is basically the best metal band in the world right now. And by "best" I mean the most boundary-pushing, technically-proficient, challenging band that is, at base, heavy as shit. It's somewhat odd for a group that began as a Metallica wannabe. But in the twenty-five years since, the Swedish outfit has gone down a completely different path, carving out its own distinct niche as a purveyor of rhythmically skewed, brutally precise, existentialist metal, spawning an entire generation of wannabes of its own -- the onomatopoeic djentmovement. Songs are written separately and in isolation by individual members on computer, performed on custom eight-string guitars with unusual tunings, and are usually devoid of any major keys. The band's just-released seventh album, Koloss, marks no stylistic departure, but has subtle shifts, with a stronger focus on groove and a warmer production. It's got plenty of hooks to latch onto, but whether you'll be able to head-bang to them is another question. At The Fillmore (1805 Geary Blvd., San Francisco) with Baroness and Decapitated on Sunday, May 6. 8 p.m., $29.50. TheFillmore.com
