It's a metal-filled week in the Bay Area, starting with Intronaut on Saturday, Jan. 31 headlining at Annie's Social Club. The LA band's 2008 album Prehistoricisms exemplifies progressive metal to the hilt: ridiculously ambitious bass work, intricate drumming, and ghastly vocals to boot. (Catch an encore performance at 924 Gilman the next day at 5 p.m.) Then head over to Rooster's Roadhouse in Alameda for Dragonlord, the fun, symphonic black metal project of Testament guitarist Eric Peterson. Try and recuperate, though, because the week caps off with Sweden's Meshuggah at what will undoubtedly be a sold-out show at Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Wednesday, Feb. 4. Few bands can touch Meshuggah's cutting technicality and precision, relentless machine-like crushing, and time signatures that boggle the mind. Don't miss openers Cynic, a pioneer in the jazz-metal movement that recently ended a fifteen-year hiatus with Traced in Air, a triumphant comeback album that landed on many a critic's top ten lists of 2008. 8 p.m., $23.
