Re: “Merritt College Nursing Woes

Hi I'm Katherine, the one in the article above. I went on to another Nursing school. I'm graduating in a few more days. I made it! Merritt was the worst experience I ever had as a student. They reminded me everyday I was a failure, they did not encourage me or teach me. Every time I did bad on a test at my new nursing school I had Merritt in back of my brain saying give it up. It was very frustrating because you do not know what to expect from a nursing school. I knew nursing school was suppose to be tough but not like this. I do think Merritt college produces good nurses, they must be strong and very focused. I was both those qualities, and still did not make the "cut". Don't let yourself think you can't be a nurse because someone who does not know how to teach tells you that. Keep going! I had nightmares about Merritt all through nursing school. I'm not an A student, never have been. Never will be. That doesn't mean I won't be a good nurse. I have 2 kids and a 75 mile commute to school. If I can make it, so can you. You have to really want it! Don't give up! You can do it!

Re: “Merritt College Nursing Woes

Hey all,

Paul Williams, one of our former classmates, called me this afternoon. He asked if I could email all of you the following story, as he does not have internet access today:

He and another one of our classmates went to campus today to attend the meeting with the Board of Registered Nursing representative, the dean, the nursing faculty and Ms. Williams. Apparently, as he and our other classmate (a female) ntried to enter the room, the Dean and Mr. Bratchett physically blocked them from entering. Mr Bratchett exchanged words with Paul, then got the County Sheriff to escort him off campus (but not our other classmate). Paul was then followed in a squad car. Paul was given some kind of piece of paper that states he can not return to campus for 2 weeks. Then, he received a phone call from the Peralta District office about an hour later, asking Paul to come see them. He is not sure why, but suspects they are trying to apologize for Mr Bratchett's actions.

Mr Bratchett and the Dean had no legal right to remove Paul! He was not causing any trouble. He plans to pursue legal action and of course, will be at the trustees' meeting tomorrow.

Once again, I am just the messenger. If you have questions regarding this incident, it would be best to get in touch with Paul. If you email me your phone number or email address, I can pass that info on to him.

I never did hear back from the students who are meeting tonight with the location and time of tonight's pre-meeting, so just come tomorrow at 7pm as previously

Hope you all are doing well. Several former 2010 Merritt nursing students have organized to speak at the Peralta Community College District Board of Trustees' Meeting tomorrow night. Apparently, these students attended the last meeting and managed to speak to some of the trustees. The trustees had heard about our situation and were incredibly supportive and horrified of what we all went through.

I am just the messenger, but I am hoping to make it myself. The more people that show up the better...please come! Bring other students/former students who are not on this email list. Bring your partners. Bring your parents. Your children! Any nurses you may know. A group of people will be meeting tonight to go over what will be said...I will be sure to forward the location and time to you when I receive them. Anyone and everyone who wants to speak tomorrow may have the chance to (even if you aren't able to make it tonight). Please show up at 7pm so everyone is on time and we're not disrupting the meeting by coming in late.

Make a difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The details:

Board of Trustees' Meeting
Category: Board Meetings
District Boardroom, 333 East 8th Street, Oakland, CA 94606 (across from the Laney College baseball field)

Re: “Merritt College Nursing Woes

RN2008 no one is talking about the NCLEX past rate. We are talking about how many people drop the program. First of all if you only had 20 -30 student graduated from your class from 80, that is low. I would hope their NCLEX pass rate was high considering there is only 20-30 students taking the test. So, go back on the BRN and look at how many students TOOK the test. We have all looked at the BRN that is how we know what a crappy
school Merritt is.

From the BRN

Merritt students
Took the test ()
(21) 52.38% (39) 79.49%( 27) 96.3% (35 ) 85.71% (43) 95.35%
so far the can not even get 50 graduating students

Modesto Junior College
(110) 83.64% 104 93.27% (107) 96.26% (160) 93.13% (144 )93.06%
* Look How many students graduated

City College of San Francisco( 66) 84.85% (80 )76.25% (66 )90.91% (71) 85.92% (108) 84.26%
* way over

Chabot and Contra Costa only let in 30-50 students

Re: “Merritt College Nursing Woes

For the students who did attend Merritt Nursing This year knows it was a complete nightmare. It was horrible the instructors failed us by not preparing us for the test. There were many changes made this year, our syllabus was different then last years, and yes I HAVE THE PROOF!!!! So do not give us that “ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE CRAP” I think your class just got lucky. How many second year students are there now? I heard you just lost 5 more students. How many did your class start with? Was it over a hundred? Merritt has always had a bad reputation, look how many students pass from other schools who admit fewer students. Like Ohlone, Contra Costa, Modesto, Stockton and Chabot. Funny this class has the nerve to defend Merritt when they are barely hanging on. Merritt has a problem and it is not their students, it is their teaching. Second year, Graduated and current students all know that. So, stop pretending the problem is not there. To "A caring future nurse" thank you for being honest. Especially about the clinical spaces, considering how the instructors lied to our face and the Chancellors face saying they can fill a hundred clinical spots, bull crap. They know that is a downright lie. Hang in there second year students and current students, just remember the ones who were scammed .Don't get to cocky because karma is a bitch. Good-luck, you are going to need it.
