Re: “Merritt College Nursing Woes

Merritt instructors when taken individually are indeed highly skilled and talented. Just because you are a great nurse, does not make you a great teacher. Unfortunately a program that tries to teach the ability to empathically and compassionately care for the sick- is not wiling or able to extend the same courtesy to its students. I get that the faculty need to " weed out" the students that are not serious. But at what price? In order to create an environment that fosters maximal learning, positivity and support are key- Merritt does NOT have this. In the field of Nursing there is a high degree of " burn out" and one can only wonder if the staff is plagued by this, or is overwhelmed and rendered ineffective by the increase in students ?. The teachers can be arrogant and really seem to be callous to the sacrifices of would be nurses in the pursuit of there career choice. The fact is, most of the students in my class are older and already have a four year degree, and really dislike being treated like imbeciles. Given all the other qualified programs in the bay area, why would you choose to go to Merritt's program? They berate their students- pull the "academic rug" out from under them and then sits back and look un-sympathetically bewildered. The instructors should take some of their own advice and use "CRITICAL THINKING" when 2/3 of a freshman class fails out in the first half of the first semester-is that a learning deficit, or more like a teaching deficit Signed- very disenchanted
