Mere Top

When: March 1-April 14 2013
Price: free

Because you haven't seen enough scrotums lately: The fragile (and, by most measures, less photogenic) underside of the male genitalia gets its due in "Gentle Men," Mathilde ter Heijne and Amy Patton's rather clinical photographic montage -- one of seven videos that local curator Christina Linden gathered for Mere Top, now at Royal Nonesuch gallery. Inspired by a similar curatorial project by the Berlin feminist collaborativef f, Mere Top includes pieces that all fall under the feminist banner to some degree. Antje Majewski and Juliane Solmsdorf's "Earth Asphalt Wedding" features subjects writhing and crawling about urban and suburban public areas, while ter Heijne's "Moon Rituals" represents the pagan worship of a lunar goddess. For "The Mirror of Simple Souls Who Are Annihilated and Remain Only in Will and Desire of Love," Patton posed a troupe of dancers and artists with the challenge of enacting a state of pure ecstasy. Each video gives something to think about, but one is much more indelible than the rest. You can probably guess which. Mere Top runs through April 14 at Royal Nonesuch Gallery (4231 Telegraph Ave., Oakland). 415-652-1623 or
