Action, Comedy, Science fiction
Same silly sci-fi premise as before, but with much, much better special effects. Those alone might justify seeing this – it’s certainly not the plot. Agent J (Will Smith) time-travels back to 1969 to prevent evil alien Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement) from destroying Earth and killing a younger version (Josh Brolin) of J’s 2012 partner, Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones). Brolin’s Tommy Lee imitation is very good, as is actor Michael Stuhlbarg’s turn as Griffin, the agency’s holy fool of a fixer. Also in the bright cast: Emma Thompson as MIB chief Agent O, Mike Colter as a sympathetic army colonel, and Nicole Scherzinger as Boris’ jail-breaking girlfriend. Directed in standard juvie-blockbuster style by veteran Barry Sonnenfeld, from a screenplay by David Koepp, Etan Cohen, Jeff Nathanson, and Michael Soccio, adapted from a comic book by Lowell Cunningham.
