Melted Toys

When: Mon., July 14, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $12
Melted Toys’ music is awash with glistening guitar leads and hushed vocals, much like its indie-rock contemporaries such as Real Estate and Smith Westerns. But humor and deft deployment of electronic tones distinguishes the San Francisco quartet’s eponymous debut. “A Postcard” channels Sugar Ray’s 1999 hit “Every Morning.” On “Blush,” brisk drum machine underpins intimate verses and an exalted, lilting chorus. Steven Harkins’ breathy vocals lend the song a confessional feel, though it sounds like he derives pleasure from admitting transgressions. Melted Toys opens with a fizzy keyboard lead and impeccably smooth electronic percussion, then a vocal sample about transporting crucial messages assumes the forefront of the mix. Taken as Melted Toys’ vow to update indie rock with flourishes from pop’s recent past, the group delivers. East Bay bandleader and fellow drum-machine devotee Sam Flax headlines Melted Toys’ album launch at Slim’s (333 11th St., San Francisco).
