Re: “Rich, Black, Flunking

To a certain degree this refusal to accept Mr Ogbu's conclusions is a result of our country never DIRECTLY confronting its racist pass. Despite what some on the Right say, Civil Rights reforms were more more like the bank bailouts: nobody went to jail, nobody lost their job. There was no Truth and Reconciliation commission. Mr. Ogbu, as an outsider, can see past the unresolved anger this generated. This is why the Right fails to help, its wants to just Forget the Past - "get over it". On the Left groups like the Urban League fail because they can't. Not with giant FU's like Jesse Helms walking around in CONGRESS for 30 years afterwards.

Which is why Obama's beer summit - simple little gesture of three men having a beer - was such a failure, not of Obama, but of the American people.

I think its important to note that these conclusions can be applied to students and parents across the spectrum in our Country. There are many white parents with similar attitudes, and similarly performing students. But not in the wealthy communities (except for some Jocks maybe, but they work hard on the field while given some pass in the classroom.)

Its interesting - i see many folks, black and white, but usually on the poor to lower middle class spectrum with a sense of entitlement or a general exaggerated sense of self. Rock star behavior in a Dollar store when an employee is a rude. It's a buffer against realization of their social/econ level and the need to do something about it . I have worked in VERY wealthy environments such a private clubs and some (but few) of the inherited wealth folks displayed similar attitudes.
