Megaton Leviathan

When: Thu., Jan. 26, 6 p.m. 2012
Price: TBA

With a name like Megaton Leviathan, it's safe to assume that this band plays heavy music. But the Portland duo (Andrew James and Chris Beug, plus assorted guests) goes beyond just colossal, ear-shattering riffs (though there is that); it's also laced with a kind of oozing psychedelic glaze, producing an ethereal, shoegaze-y take on Neurosis-style heaviness. The band describes its (mostly instrumental) music and live performances in terms more benefitting an experience at Burning Man (e.g., "magical," "spiritual," "sacred"), which could be a turnoff to metal fans who don't often find themselves twirling naked in the desert. But the band's emphasis on hooks and powerful buildups makes its sound particularly compelling, having captured the attention of fellow eco-conscious Pacific Northwest heavyweights Wolves in the Throne Room, who they toured with last year. With the band's usual visual display, expect Megaton Leviathan's performance at Eli's Mile High Club (3629 Martin Luther King Blvd., Oakland) on Thursday, Jan. 26, to be transcendent. 6 p.m., ticket price TBA.
