Meat Puppets

When: Fri., June 17, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $16

Staples of the SST Records artist stable in the 1980s, the Meat Puppets went on to influence the likes of Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Dinosaur, Jr. And while the band enjoyed grunge-era success with 1994's Too High to Die and its radio hit "Backwater," a combination of bassist Cris Kirkwood's battles with substance abuse and the changing music industry landscape made the Phoenix natives a forgotten commodity for most of the past decade. Frontman/guitarist Curt Kirkwood reunited with his now-clean sibling and new drummer Ted Marcus in 2006 for the welcome but overlooked Rise to Your Knees. With the band's 13th studio effort Lollipop, the Kirkwoods and Marcus' replacement Shandon Sahm still traffic in the band's quirky take on country-rock ("Baby Don't") and melody-kissed psychedelic pop ("Way That It Are"). Kurt Cobain's favorite band brings its absurdist cow-punk sounds to The Independent (628 Divisadero St., San Francisco) on Friday, June 17. 9 p.m.,$16.
