Mark Wahlberg stars as Max Payne in this highly stylized but oft mind-numbing adaptation of the smash video game. He spends his days haunted by the unsolved murders of his wife and child, rage building inside him. Things change, however, when a run of new murders bearing cryptic clues unleash his inner Charles Bronson (expressed via a series of semi-varied scowls). The mystery involves a hot, leather-clad assassin (Mila Kunis), a drug with a supernatural kick, and a whole lot of bullet-time fun with guns, but very little humanity despite the my-family’s-dead-and-I-want-to-burn-down-the-world setup (100 min.).
