Matthew Dear

When: Fri., Feb. 24, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $16, $18

While attending college in Michigan in the late '90s, a young Matthew Dear met Sam Valenti IV. Their friendship became the basis of electronic label Ghostly International. Since then, the Ann Arbor-based collective, which has strong roots in San Francisco, has been a key purveyor of cutting edge electronic sounds birthed from the Detroit techno that its founders came up loving. Dear's productions are taut, pop-inspired electro, heavy on vocal samples and steadily danceable rhythms. Support from San Francisco acts MausHaus and Exray's should perfectly round out this bill; Both bands, who have shared members, are unafraid to take what are essentially pop songs, put them in an atom-splitter with their MPCs and keyboards, and come out with a fuzzy mash that's bound to warm up Noise Pop Fest goers looking for dancier options. San Diego's Tropical Popsicle opens, and DJ Mossmoss will close out the night: At Public Works (161 Erie St., San Francisco), on Friday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m., $18,
