Re: “Affordable Housing on Public Land

I have a computer science degree too. I am fortunate that my hard work is well-paid by society. Other people who aren't as fortunate work hard too, but they need help. I think it's better for fortunate people to not resent helping people out who need it. You should try it!

Re: “Special Deal Would Benefit Influential Oakland Developer

I live in Oakland. This is my community. I pay property taxes here.

I think height limits are ridiculous and prevent us from having the density we need to support public transit and affordable housing.

Density is progressive. Everyone knows this.

Why are voices like mine dismissed?

Re: “Berkeley Councilmember Lori Droste Proposes Reforms to Prioritize Affordable Housing Over Parking

Eleanor, what solutions do you have for the transportation problem and the affordable housing problem? Doing nothing--which is what I suggest you're proposing--means that both will get worse.

Keep in mind that not all folks are lucky enough to have bought a house when it was cheap and that is now worth a fortune. And not all folks are lucky enough to have moved into a rent controlled apartment a decade ago.

We can't just say to those folks, too bad. It's time to move past an era of 'I've got mine, go away.'

Re: “Berkeley Councilmember Lori Droste Proposes Reforms to Prioritize Affordable Housing Over Parking

Are any of the folks who think we need to preserve parking the same folks who are trying to stop the car dealership on Shattuck? If so, I'd love to hear how this isn't hypocritical.

Re: “How Bay Area Apartment Buildings Waste Money, Space on Car Parking

I didn't realize you thought that the absurd, outdated 2 parking spots per unit requirement was good.

I'm glad I know now, so I don't vote for you in the next election you inevitably run in.

You didn't address all of the data in this article--data that came from non-developers who are working hard to make the city better. It's rude to just dismiss an argument out of hand this way.

Re: “Schaaf Fails Her First Big Test

This is only the beginning. The mayor's proposed budget adds $17M to the OPD budget. That $17M comes from cutting housing & community development funds by 50%.

With OPD policy like this, Schaaf is essentially routing funds from community housing to pay for lawsuits. This is no way to turn Oakland around, and funds blown on OPD lawsuits mean less money for cops--and a more dangerous Oakland.

Re: “Oakland Apartment Tower Deal May Be Illegal

I emailed the mayor about this, but I didn't get a reply. I'm not sure that the current administration is terribly different than the last few.

Why do we keep electing the same mediocre officials? Because we can rally our neighbors to vote better.
