Matt 136

When: Feb. 2-7 2010

Productivity is well and good in late-capitalist art practice, but 250 pieces in one show is aiming at some kind of record. Matt 136 (somebody should call his union rep!) is showing a dizzying array of small-to-medium-size drawings, paintings, and sculptures in a variety of styles (Pop, Gothic, cartooning and skateboarding, tattooing). These impeccably crafted ballpoint pen drawings on paper, painted wooden plaques and vinyl records, puppets, shadow boxes, and assemblages are replete with cartoon-style bunnies, mice, birds, fish, dinosaurs, devils, mummies, robots, squids, samurai, skulls and skeletons, and flying toasters -- along with somewhat more realistic depictions of Jocko, Elvis, Dexter Gordon, Eric Dolphy, Coleman Hawkins, and friends of the artist. Sendak meets the Simpsons in this culture-mashup extraordinaire, reminiscent of Old Master Keith Haring for its energy and exuberance. Matt 136 runs through February 7 at Autobody Fine Art (1517 Park St., Alameda). 510-865-2608 or
