When: March 9-July 20 2008

Thirty years ago the MATRIX program at the Berkeley Art Museum began presenting small project-based works by living artists. Now, 220 exhibitions later, the roster of artists includes Bay Area luminaries like Lutz Bacher, Robert Bechtle, Joan Brown, Theresa Cha, Bruce Conner, Jay DeFeo, David Ireland, Paul Kos, Tom Marioni, Richard Misrach, Ursula Schneider, Richard Serra, and Larry Sultan along with many other familiar art-world names. REDUX celebrates the program's longevity and influence (with similar programs in nearly all major art museums); the prescience of museum director James Elliot in 1978; and, of course, the vital experimental art that emerged. With some 83 pieces in every medium by 54 artists selected from BAM's and local private collections, the show features a wide range of styles and approaches. In addition, a yearlong series of artist/curator conversations is scheduled. Through July 6 at BerkeleyArt Museum (2626 Bancroft Way, Berkeley) or 510-642-0808.
