Writer-director Avi Nesher's richly detailed drama deals with the Shoah, as reflected in the face of the title character, a glowering schadchen named Yankele Bride (actor Adir Miller in a performance of pure bravura), who befriends a likable kid named Arik Burstein (Tuval Shafir) in Haifa, circa 1968. The coming-of-age story contains an undercurrent of real menace, not just candy nostalgia. Meanwhile Haifa’s low-rent district, with its Bollywood movie house and the Dwarfs’ Theater, is seen as the bohemian place to be for Arik, especially when he encounters Tamara (Neta Porat), a sexy Iraqi-Jewish-American girl, the Carly Simon of the piece.
