Mason Jennings

When: Fri., Nov. 9, 12 p.m. 2007
Price: free

No relation to Waylon, but Mason Jennings has a country streak. It shares space with folk, pop, LaurelCanyon singer-songwriter vibes, Eastern mysticism, and a fair balance of playful whimsy and political protest. This could easily become a mess, but Jennings has it all pinned down, following a different muse from one album (he's released six so far) or even one song to the next without losing his center. But best of all is his delivery: a sweet, down-to-earth croon that swoops up at the end of each line, then drops down low again for the beginning of the next. Coupled with Jennings' natural storytelling and sincere romanticism, it's enough to transform him into a heartthrob before young ladies and a hero before their sympathetic boyfriends. Jennings performs Friday, Nov. 9 at UC Berkeley's LowerSproulPlaza. Noon, free.
