.Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses at Zellerbach in Berkeley

The visually stunning play by Mary Zimmerman is coming back to its Bay Area roots this month. Metamorphoses had its West Coast premiere at the Zellerbach Playhouse 18 years ago, and now it’s back to delight a new generation of theater enthusiasts. Zimmerman’s play is loosely based on the translation of The Metamorphoses of Ovid, with characters such as Poseidon, King Midas, and Eurydice sharing universal stories about love, hope, death, betrayal, and transformation. The world of the human and the divine will collide on the Zellerbach Playhouse stage, set in and around a body of water thanks to a custom-built 2,000-gallon pool. The production also features more than 100 costumes, designed by Wendy Sparks, and is directed by Chris Herold. If you enjoy Greek mythology and have never seen this play, you won’t want to miss it.

Runs Oct. 13 through Oct. 22, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m., $13-$20, Zellerbach Playhouse, UC Berkeley, TDPS.Berkeley.edu
