Re: “Stay Gold Deli Is West Oakland's New Neighborhood Delicatessen

I literally saw a $10 box of dried pasta in the grocery section of that shop.

They also very obviously went to a wholesale grocer, got various dry goods, put them in plastic bags with "Stay Gold Deli" stickers on them, and added price tags that are 50% higher than Whole Foods.

Re: “Town Business: Not Even Halfway to Housing Goal; Crude Oil; and Data Disaster Preparedness

Dan Kalb,

The persistent, systemic habit that Oakland has of delaying large housing developments is a major factor in builders' lack of interest in Oakland compared to other nearby cities.

Even without delays imposed by Councilmembers, our entitlement process takes way too long. And this particular developer has already gone to great lengths to get community buy-in.

So while it's hard to say there's a 1-to-1 displacement effect caused by your demand to delay one particular planning commission hearing, your behavior is 100% part of the problem.

Further, your support for affordable housing, while admirable, is not going to do enough to address the housing crisis. Currently, permanently affordable rental units make up only one eighth of the rental market. The rate at which affordable units are being produced is not high enough to bring that one eight number up significantly any time soon. Even with a regional housing bond the gains won't be enough to solve our problems.

That means 7 out of 8 Oakland renters will continue to need market rate rentals for the foreseeable future. Your willingness to slow down the entitlement process for new market rate units means you're delaying a desperately needed increase in the housing supply. And even if the effect in one instance is minimal, you're setting an example of what standard procedure is, for your colleagues to follow, all over the city.

Re: “Oakland City Council Takes Stand Against Sex Workers

The East Bay Express should suspend their policy against pseudonymous comments on this article. Adult Sex Workers can't use their real names because self-righteous fools like Demand Abolition and Ruhama want them jailed.

The World Health Organization, Amnesty International and The UN Commission on HIV/AIDS all support legalizing adult sex work. They believe it will reduce sex trafficking. That's not a "very well-organized vocal minority" as the District Attorney puts it. That's three international organizations who do real policy research and who all came to the same conclusion.

Re: “Facebook's Lack of Integrity

An op-ed against Facebook's "real name policy" in the East Bay Express?

Did anybody think for a minute about how the East Bay Express has it's own "Real Name Policy"?

Re: “Schaaf's Priorities Are Out of Whack

There is no ban on protests. There is no ban on protests at night.

The Mayor changed one thing: No more blocking traffic after dark without a permit. This is not a civil rights violation. This is a reasonable restriction which is not unlike restrictions upheld by the Supreme Court in Grayned v. City of Rockford and Clark v CCNV.

Protesters can march on sidewalks, they can carry signs.
They can stand on corners at intersections and wave signs.
Protesters can shout whatever they want while waving their signs.
Protesters can gather in public parks and chant and wave signs.
They can do all of this any time of day they want to, without a permit.

This is not a ban on free speech. People can still speak, peaceably assemble, and petition their government for redress of grievances. They just can't play in traffic while they do it.

If GATS wanted to comment on this article, he couldn't because it's against the East Bay Express' policy.

Re: “Vinyl Nightclub Wrongly Blamed for Shooting in Downtown Oakland

Maybe Mr. Lefebvre should have put in a public records request for calls to the cops related to Venue before he wrote this. This club is a problem.

It's not about race either. I don't see other Black-run bars having anything like this kind of problem. The New Parish doesn't seem to have violence in front of it every weekend. It's not about race, it's about Oscar Edwards being willing to turn a blind eye to shady clientele that most other bars would tell not to come back.
