Mary Fettig

When: Tue., July 1, 8 & 10 p.m. 2008
Price: $10

Concord-born alto saxophonist Mary Fettig plays anything labeled "jazz" and beyond, from bebop to big band. From being in the first band to win Monterey Jazz Festival's high school competition in 1971 (Concord's Ygnacio Valley High) to her tenure as the first woman in the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Fettig has a long career playing locally and nationally, is a regular at the Concord Jazz Festival and other major jazz festivals, and works with everyone from Marian McPartland to the late Joe Henderson. On Tuesday, July 1, Fettig celebrates the release of her latest CD, Brazilian Footprints, at Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero West, Oakland). The recording features some of her favorite tunes by great Brazilian composers, done her way. She is accompanied by keyboardist Marcos Silva, guitarist Jeff Buenz, drummer CelsoAlberti, and bassist Scott Thompson. 8 & 10 p.m., $10.Yoshis.com or510-238-9200.
