Re: “Oakland to Take Down Lake Merritt Signs Prohibiting Musical Instruments, Activists Plan Protests

Mr McDonald also gave a hard time to a group of black men on "Love Your Lake" day who were riding around on bicycles playing amplified music, with a permit. Mr. McDonald called the police on them, and the police informed Mr. McDonald that there was nothing they could do since they had a permit.

I'm sure Mr. McDonald made several assumptions about the role those young black men played in the community based upon their striking looks and music. What Mr. McDonald did not know, or seemed interested in learning about, is how those black men are responsible for reducing crime and violence in East Oakland by getting young black men interested in bicycles and fixing bicycles. They donate their time to organizations and lead youth toward conflict resolution skills.

Mr. McDonald should be humbled and embarrassed for his actions against a group of Oakland youth working hard to change the community, and for his assumptions.
